The best Finnish team’s heads were slightly hanging after the competition.
The victory was for a bit at Kalevalan Rasti’s Thierry Gueorgioun hands,
but one control point in the end of the route cancelled the celebration.
Especially Gueorgiou seemed to be disappointed after the competition. Adjusted to win 30 years old orienteer champion fret over the mistake he made at one control point.
At that time he had captured the 3,5 minute lead with his stunning performance and was leading the competition at the allocation control point. Everything was looking good for a while.
Until something suddenly happened.
“Of that kind control point I would find easily”, Gueorgiou lament. “There was a rock in a gentle slope and fallen trees. I turned too much and I couldn’t see the control point.”
When starting the final leg Gueorgiou knew that catching up nearly four minutes
lead is normally impossible, but because Haldenin Emil Wingsted wasn’t having his best day, therefore it would be possible to catch him. He was right.
Right in the end when Gueorgiou and Norwegian Kristiansand OK’s Daniel Hubmann run side by side, Gueorgiou made a different route choice. The audience must have thought that the competition was solved in that point.
However Gueorgiou said that in his choice of route had no impact to the competitions result. “Daniel was in better shape” he admitted.
In the end Thierry Gueorgiou wasn’t too sad about the second place. “Next year we will come and win the Jukola, he noticed.
